Mass Ave Beat

Posted on May 15th, 2010 by Richard. Categories: Community Feature.

Not your typical road marker, the famous Dancing Girls provide a friendly welcoming committee to the Massachusetts Avenue corridor. Snow, sleet, rain or shine they never stop movin and swayin to the ever-present Mass Ave beat. Sometime I probably should add a video rather than a still photo so you can see the whole performance. When you see this it makes you feel like there probably is fun to be had nearby. And there is actually. The Mass

Old School Thinking

One of the best features about the Indiana State Museum is the immensity of space there. Large-as-life displays for instance like this replica of the 3-story facade of Indianapolis’ School No. 5. After entering from the underground parking garage, it’s one of the first things you see inside the Grand Lobby. The site of the original School No. 5 was not too far from where the museum is now located and was named after the 19th century social activist

Hall of Champions

Another jewel at White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis is the NCAA Hall of Champions. Of course at this time with NCAA basketball championships, the focus is on round-ball, but whatever college sport or legendary athletes that you identify with, there are tributes and fond memories to encounter. It’s more than a museum, it’s a hands-on experience where sports and memories come alive.

My favorite place there however is the downsized half-court which is made

Dogs House

How bout those Bull Dogs! It’s been really fun to watch them rise to the top over the last few years. Just lately though, it seems like there have been a lot of comparisons drawn between the Butler Bulldogs who advanced Saturday to the Final-Four in the NCAA Championship and the Milan High School State Champs of 1954. I guess writers have to come up with some kind of story line to make it

The Portal

I just liked this photo and wanted to share it. It’s a view of a section of the small service road at IMA that winds from the museum and parking areas toward the canal and nature park behind IMA . The top of this bridge is part of walking paths above that connect the museum to the gardens, Oldfields Mansion and Greenhouse areas. When I was walking on this road I thought this looked and felt like some sort

Walking

Posted on February 28th, 2010 by Richard. Categories: Community Feature, Sports & Recreation.

The streets have been so icy for a while that eventually my normal routine of jogging was disrupted and instead I’ve just been walking occasionally, running a little when the ice is clear in spots. Sometimes instead I exercised and “ran” using the Wii Fit when it’s been really snowy…which is really fun and a more serious way of getting exercise than you’d think if you haven’t tried it. But today I had some time and

Wall of Windows

If you’ve read some of the recent posts here, I talked in one about some new exhibits at the Indiana State Museum about Abraham Lincoln. Well, I went there to see them myself yesterday. The museum controls the number of people who go through so it doesn’t get too crowded, letting a certain number of people enter every 15 minutes. I was told the average person goes through the exhibits in about 45 minutes.
