Conventional Wisdom

If you travel down Capital Avenue near downtown, it’s easy to forget that the Hoosier Dome was ever there at all. The building that was so much a part of the downtown landscape and sports history has vanished. That was part of the deal put together to build Lucas Oil Stadium. By the way, I like it’s nickname ‘The Luke’. Has a bit more swagger don’t you think? Like it’s ‘one

Official Tree

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by Richard. Categories: Holidays, Public Buildings & Sites.

This being  the day before Christmas, I thought this photo would be appropriate. The tree this year that gets the honor of standing in the Capital Rotunda is a 23 year old, 25 ft. Concolor Fir. It was grown in a tree farm in northern Indiana, cut and brought to the Capital building earlier this month. The ornaments visible were made by children from area schools which they hung during recent holiday festivities. I

Land of the Indians

Posted on December 22nd, 2009 by Richard. Categories: Public Buildings & Sites.

This is a close-up of one of the gables on a small section of roof on the the Indiana Statehouse. Zoom lenses are great , huh? When I looked at this shot the first time, I was just admiring all the intricate details…and then I started to wonder who this figure was immortalized in stone? Both of these photos were taken on two different days when I was doing just that. It’s an imposing structure and has a mysterious air about it just because very few know much about it.

An evening shot of the State Capital building looking west on Market Street taken very recently from high on the steps of the Monument a couple blocks away. I thought the Dome looked especially interesting, all lit-up for the season…and the lights on Market Street give things a nice glow.

Here’s another view below taken in May earlier this year. Obviously a little closer and from a different angle taken from street

Stoplight at Alabama

Posted on November 19th, 2009 by Richard. Categories: Downtown, Public Buildings & Sites.

I was driving around downtown looking for a parking spot and happened to stop at a traffic signal on east Market Street at Alabama. I was the only car at the light facing west…and there was my camera lying on the passenger seat…and I just happened to be staring at one of my favorite photo subjects, dead center, a couple blocks up. So naturally, I snapped a quick one out the front of the

Monon Trail

Posted on September 4th, 2009 by Richard. Categories: Community Feature, Public Buildings & Sites.

As I walked to a store from the parking lot, an in-line skater with a backpack whizzed past me, jumped a small curb and curved onto the Monon Trail headed north. I wanted to see where they were going in such a hurry, so I peered down the trail. Soon they were a distant miniature image skating onward and they blended into the trees and foliage and other trail users there.
