OK, it’s 10 degrees outside, what would you like to do? I’d imagine going for swim outside would not make the top five answers. But maybe if you were a goose in Indianapolis, it just might?

Saw these guys enjoying themselves in Fall Creek today. They would float along slowly with the current…and then all turn around at the same time and paddle back up stream and do it all over again. Lot’s of fun to them I guess. It was cool and I was having a hard enough time just trying to make my fingers work the camera buttons after a few minutes. Can’t imagine my legs and feet immersed in ice cold water for hours like they do?

Take a float trip with the guys down Fall Creek
(Well…sort of )
This certainly can’t compete with the scale of any of those other structures…but then again, none of those other pyramids have water cascading down the sides of them either. So there! Plus you don’t have to take a month off to travel and spend a fortune hiring local guides and a team of llamas to make the trek to visit. Yes, right here in our fair city, for just the price of a parking meter, one can experience a link to ancient civilizations.

I went through the new airport facility recently and just had to say something. Wow…what a difference from the one I remember from the old days. The Indianapolis International Airport was relocated and rebuilt from the ground up last year. The earlier version from the 50′s is like a bus station compared to this latest creation. The place reminds me now a little bit like being at one of the mega-exhibits at Epcot in Disney World. A modernistic look, open and spacious, with really clean lines. Kind of an upbeat and fun atmosphere. You could have convinced me that I was inside Epcots new World of Aviation instead.

If you are traveling, the terminal seems to function well. Lots of creature comforts and lounges that turn waiting for a flight delay into a real pleasure instead. There’s a number of shops and an immense and attractive food court that has something for everyone. There’s tons of covered parking and an amazing support network for travelers needing car rentals.

While most people will enjoy the airport for passenger flights, the commercial cargo end of the business is impressive. Especially the FedEx facility. It has a huge presence there. What an asset for the city to have their shipping hub located here. Their operation here is the second largest in the world.

OK…Ready to take a thrill ride at World of Aviation? Pretend you just flew in from New York-Kennedy, gathered your luggage, and now heading home. Take a trip to the parking garage from the terminal on the People Mover, automatic sidewalk! Video-YouTube

I figure if the fountain is located in University Park then it must be a “fountain of knowledge”? OK…well, maybe that’s a stretch for literary purposes. But then again…I sat within eyesight of this fountain recently on a park bench for only about 10 minutes…and learned some things.

While I was there, I talked with a boy of about 12 who was waiting for his mother. He explained that his Mom was kind of late and was at a job interview someplace for a second time. She had been out of work for a while. He was curious about me taking photos…so I told him what I was doing…showed him my camera. And I talked briefly with a older man with dreadlocks and an old coat and trousers who wanted to know what time it was…and then told me a story of how he was looking for a place to live and couldn’t find one. That one really made me think. A minute or two later, a well dressed man, young executive type, talking on a cell phone walked through and then stopped, close enough that I could hear one side of his phone conversation. He was trying to put a deal together that sounded like it was going south in a hurry. “I’ve been there before” I thought. And all the while the pigeons were bobbing, strutting, hunting and competing for any stray crumbs and morsels that someone may have left behind.

It just struck me that everyone is trying to live and take care of the basics, one way or another. Me, you, everyone… even pigeons. Not that I didn’t know that already. But the park was showing me short glimpses of others doing the same dance. Maybe the dance steps were a little different with each one but the dance was the same. The fountain of knowledge?…well…on this day it was for me anyway.

Here’s a small taste of the action at the
fountain at University Park downtown.

A lot of people headed out to the Speedway today. But even if you don’t go to the track, if you live in or near Indianapolis, you know what today is…it’s Race Day. If you are outdoors as the race is being run, you can hear the roar of the cars for miles in any direction, and surprisingly a lot farther if the wind and atmosphere are just right. Even if you don’t go to the track today, something inside you still has to listen to the radio or at least check now and again to see how it’s going. It’s just part of being from Indy.

Whatever you have chosen to do, I hope you are enjoying today and having fun this Memorial Day weekend.
